RECEIVED FROM JIM LAZALIER MARCH 6, 2002
When I looked at the ship specifications I noticed an inaccuracy which has been carried by publications for a long period of time. The Carpenter and The Owens both had two twin 3"50 guns when first commissioned. The Carpenter received 3"70's in 1957 and the 5"38 in the 1960's.
RECEIVED FROM JIM BURTON MARCH 16, 2002
I served on the Carpenter from 1949 (Plankowner) until April of 1953
when I was transferred back to San Diego for reassignment.
No mention has been made of the special ASW weapons that we carried
i.e., the MK 108 Launchers (one forward and one aft) that were used
for Weapon Able (that was essentially a rocket propelled depth
charge), which had a diameter of 12.75". As I remember the forward
Launcher was only fired one or two times during my stay on Carpenter
(first shot burned out the launcher and most of the paint off the
forward part of the bridge). We had four 21" fixed mount torpedo
tubes (two to port and two to Stbd) but no torpedoes.
Jim Burton (former ET1)
